VUS students win big at Eloquent Speaking Contest (14-03-2010)

VUS students won 2 first prizes, 2 second prizes, 1 third prize and 2 consolation prizes for all three age categories at the HCM City Eloquent English Speaking Contest.

With the theme "Students in the city named after Uncle Ho study and follow the moral example of Ho Chi Minh", the Eloquent English Speaking Contest held by the HCMC Department of Education and Training to promote emulation move-ments in improving the quality of teaching and learning English.

Fluency, confidence

Thien Kim, the youngest student (12 years old), won first prize in the competition and was awarded an English summer study trip in Singapore by VUS. Kim gladly shared: "I'm very happy to receive this award. Thanks to studying at VUS my English has improved a lot and I am much more confident in my English abilities. The upcoming summer study trip in Singapore is an opportunity for me to practice what I have learned about English.”

Among the contesting schools, VUS had the largest number of students able to reach the final round: 7 out of 14 students. VUS also ranked first in the tally. VUS offered valuable rewards for winning students such as summer study trips to Sin-gapore, scholarships, laptops and notebooks as a show of appreciation and recogni-tion for their excellence.

First prize for age groups from 3 to 12 and from 13 to 17: Nguyen Tran Thien Kim, Dao Minh Nguyet

Second prize for age group from 13 to 17 and from 18 and above: Nguyen Hang Phuong Dung and Dang Huynh Minh Tri.

Third prize for age group from 13 to 17: Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy

Consolation prizes for age groups from 6 to 12 and from 18 and above: Quach Thi Xuan Trang and Dam Huy Phat

"You have presented fluently and confidently!" was the jury's assessment for stu-dents from the Vietnam-USA Society English School System. Not only were they confident but they also presented fluently, firmly, and logically. Together with their perfect pronunciation, they completely convinced everyone.

Training Unit: Quality comes with quantity

To achieve such results, students had to undergo a long and harsh learning process, but the role of the English school was also very important. To affirm its commit-ment to training quality, VUS pays special attention to the learning environment for students.

VUS currently has 10 training centers throughout the inner city and suburban dis-tricts of Ho Chi Minh City to meet the learning needs of a great number of stu-dents. Particularly, the Vietnam-USA Society English school system is designed and built by leading companies at home and abroad in accordance with interna-tional standards and at large scales.

Each facility can serve from 4,000 to 5,000 students with classrooms designed and equipped modernly to best meet the learning needs of students. Besides designing the classrooms to create multiple interfaces for learners and teachers, the labs and the libraries have Internet connections including WiFi in all facilities to help stu-dent find information to widen their knowledge.

VUS teachers are well chosen in accordance with strict recruitment policies, at many levels from theory to practice to ensure international teaching quality. VUS has more than 700 foreign and Vietnamese teachers and has organized a great number of advanced training courses, seminars, and workshops to help teachers strengthen and improve professional qualifications.

In addition, the textbooks used at VUS are from renowned publishers in the world like Oxford, Cambridge, MacMillan, Cengage ... helping students access the knowledge and methods of effective learning added.

Mrs. Tran My An, a parent of Dao Minh Nguyet - the first prize winner in the Elo-quent English Speaking Competition, shared: "Since the first course at VUS, my child has been learning English excitedly and making great progress. The other subjects were also improved quite a lot. I am very happy for my child’s achieve-ments. Especially, the result that my child achieved today is a very big honor for the family. I would also like to show my gratitude to the teachers at VUS for my child’s accomplishments.”

Furthermore, on March 14, 2010, VUS English School System held a ceremony to reward the 7 learners winning the first, second, third and consolation prizes at the final round of the 1st Eloquent English Speaking Competition held by the Depart-ment of Education and Training.

Also at the ceremony, VUS awarded the Cambridge Flyers certificates authorized by Cambridge University for 329 students. This is the International English Lan-guage certificate for children aged 6 to 12, including such levels like Starters, Movers, and Flyers, recognized by 135 countries in the world. According to the Cambridge University Testing Center, Cambridge test scores from VUS students are 30% higher than the average scores in Asia.
